Senator Schultz Statement on Being Challenged in GOP Primary

“Representative Marklein’s announcement this past weekend that he’ll be challenging me in a Republican primary in August of 2014 was not a surprise, but it was unexpected.
After 30 years in the state legislature, nothing surprises me anymore. However, with
a 98.7% Republican voting record, as compared to my Leader in the state Senate last
session, I thought that would’ve been enough to stave off a primary challenge.

I’m reminded of the Biblical verse in Ecclesiastes that says, “To everything there is a
season…” There’ll be time for campaigns later. Right now, I’m focused on doing what
the people of the 17th Senate district sent me here to do – represent them, all of them
regardless of party affiliation, on the issues that concern them most like job creation,
education, and fiscal responsibility.

During my entire service in the legislature, I’ve always waited until about a year before
my term is up to sit down with my family and a few close supporters to assess whether
I should run for re-election. Then I make a decision sometime after the first of the year.
I’ll use the same process this time regardless of the events of this past weekend.

In the meantime, I’ll be working hard with my colleagues on the state budget process and
assisting my constituents with their needs and concerns. I can’t remember when I’ve felt
more engaged and had a better time doing what the folks of the 17th district have elected
me to do – represent them and reflect their concerns. I love this state, and I’m energized
to continue to do my part in helping move the lives of all Wisconsinites forward.”

  1. Thank you for being the Senator you are: one who listens to your constituents and takes their concerns seriously. This is so important because some Wisconsin Senators have forgotten to pay attention to the people they represent. Good luck with your campaign. You are a winner!

    Dear Editor,
Sorry for the tardy response, but my issue of the TCP for April 18, 2013 arrived yesterday, along with two other additions. I read the story about Representative Marklein announcing that he would oppose Senator Schultz in the 2014 election.

In my seven years as superintendent at Cuba City, I was never accused of being close to Senator Dale Schultz. We often disagreed about school aid. However I was pleased to see that he had the courage to be the only republican to oppose Act 10 and stand for our schools. Now Representative Marklein is opposing Dale Schultz because of that support. So Marklein starts his campaign against any independent thought in the republican party. He seems to think the interests of southwestern Wisconsin would be better served by having a lap dog for Governor Walker.

I salute Senator Schultz for his vote and his courage.

  4. Wow a wolf in sheep's clothing, possibly you don't understand why you are being challenged, it is of course because of you arrogance in holding up major and important legislation that would lead to increased job growth in Wisconsin. As for your endorsement from the illiterate superintendent from Cuba City, I think his qualifications lie in one word "additions." Also your endorsement of Tony Evers as a person qualified to speak on the subject of school choice expansion shows you personal lack of intelligence. Tony Evers is a corrupt extension of WEAC and your endorsement of him makes one believe that perhaps you are under the same ownership.
